The Louisiana Supreme Court on Monday "refused to hear an appeal" by the estranged family of Saints and Pelicans Owner TOM BENSON, "bringing their attempt to have the 88-year-old declared incompetent to an end." Benson's attorney PHIL WITTMANN said that a New Orleans judge's ruling last year finding the billionaire mentally competent to manage the teams and his other affairs "has been affirmed." Benson's daughter RENEE BENSON and grandchildren RITA and RYAN LEBLANC argued that the patriarch "is in mental decline and being unduly influenced by Benson's third wife GAYLE and an inner circle of Saints executives" (New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE, 5/3).

SHARING IS CARING: Swift Transportation CEO and former Coyotes Owner JERRY MOYES gave shares of the company to his children that were then "used to help settle a legal dispute" with the NHL. The NHL sued Moyes, his wife and their family trust in '10, "claiming it was owed for costs and damages related to the bankruptcy" of the Coyotes. Moyes "had given two million shares to four of his adult children, who then pledged them as collateral in the settlement." The shares were worth about $34M as of yesterday (WSJ.com, 5/3).

REMOTE CONTROL: DALE EARNHARDT JR. "is the executive producer of CMT’s 'NASCAR: THE RISE OF AMERICAN SPEED' which debuts" Sunday at 9:00pm ET with the first episode in a three-part series. The show "features historic footage combined with a story told through reenactments." Sunday’s episode shows how NASCAR Founder BILL FRANCE SR. NAMES: Leaders of the Predators Foundation yesterday announced that the group had “distributed more than 100 grants totaling nearly $451,000 -- the largest one-time donation in the franchise's history -- to Nashville and Middle Tennessee-based community service and charitable organizations” (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 5/4)....K.C.-based KCSP-AM’s DANNY PARKINS and CARRINGTON HARRISON “were outraged" that the Chiefs drafted WR TYREEK HILL, who "pleaded guilty to choking his pregnant girlfriend” in ’14.
