Spurs Could Pursue TV Network As Contract With FS Southwest Set To Expire In '19

The Spurs' current TV deal with FS Southwest does not expire until '19, but the team is "already contemplating options, including the possible development of a new Spurs network," according to W. Scott Bailey of the SAN ANTONIO BUSINESS JOURNAL. One possibility Spurs Sports & Entertainment "has not ruled out is to create or secure an equity position" in a new RSN that "would be anchored in large part by Spurs-related programming." It is a path other teams in multiple sports leagues "have pursued." However, as the Rockets and Astros "learned with the failed" CSN Houston, "there are some hurdles." SS&E Exec VP/Corporate Partnerships, Broadcasting, Branding & Content Lawrence Payne said that the dissolution of CSN Houston "won't prevent other such networks from achieving success." Bailey reported SS&E first will "reach out to FSSW about a potential new deal." The Spurs averaged an 8.71 local rating in San Antonio for FSSW telecasts during the regular season, and that figure jumps to a 9.1 rating "when factoring in" games televised by KENS-TV and KMYS-CW. SS&E "has placed a greater emphasis on streaming of Spurs content, including game broadcasts." Team officials said that the digital platform "will be a key part of the next broadcast negotiations." Some NBA franchises "fear streaming will erode traditional broadcast viewership." But Payne said that SS&E "views this technology as a gateway to new business opportunities" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/3).
