Hartford Skeptical Developer Can Deliver Dunkin' Donuts Park By May 17 Deadline

Hartford city officials yesterday "expressed doubt that developers can meet a May 17 deadline for 'substantial completion'" of the $63M Dunkin' Donuts Park for the Double-A Eastern League Yard Goats, according to a front-page piece by Steven Goode of the HARTFORD COURANT. Eastern League President Joe McEacharn said that he was "unwilling to commit to a home opening date of May 31." Hartford Dir of Development Sean Fitzpatrick said of the planned completion date, "We have grave concerns at this point." Goode notes the contract stipulates that "'substantial completion' means that the project plans have been completed to the point that the stadium can be turned over in 'turn-key' condition" and that the stadium has "received at least a temporary certificate of occupancy." Int'l Facilities Group Exec VP Kevin Greene, whose firm is developing the ballpark, "acknowledged in his monthly report" to the Hartford Stadium Authority that by "employing double shifts and six- and seven-day work weeks, the developer should be able to receive a temporary certificate of occupancy for the stadium by May 17." But he said that work "related to 'substantial completion' would go beyond that date." Fitzpatrick said that there is about $4.3M "left in the construction budget," but about $6M is "needed for completion" (HARTFORD COURANT, 5/4).
