Ezekiel Elliott Turns Heads On NFL Draft Red Carpet With Crop Top Button-Down Shirt

The Cowboys selected Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott with the No. 4 pick in Thursday night's NFL Draft, but stole the show on the red carpet prior to the event, as he "sported a crop top," according to Drew Davison of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. Social media began "buzzing about Elliott baring his midriff," an homage to how he wore his jersey at OSU.  Elliott: "It started as a joke. But I started thinking, 'Hmmm, what if I actually did it?' I stepped out on a limb and I did it. I think it was pretty funny" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/29). USA TODAY's Lindsay Jones notes Elliott donned a "baby blue jacket and white bow tie on the red carpet," but it was his cropped blue-and-white checkered plaid shirt "that truly made Elliott stand out from his draft prospect peers" (USA TODAY, 4/29). Elliott: "I wanted to be a little different than everyone else. I'm known as the hero in the half-shirt, so I had to go out on the red carpet with a crop-top" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 4/29). ABC's Jimmy Kimmel said now that Elliott has been drafted, he "can afford the rest of his shirt" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/28). In N.Y., Vanessa Friedman writes Elliott is "clearly thinking ahead to the creation of Brand Zeke, pursuing a strategy in which fashion increasingly plays a part when it comes to athletes of all sports" (NYTIMES.com, 4/29).

COMPANY MAN: In L.A., Gary Klein notes Jared Goff, the No. 1 overall pick by the Rams, was "dapperly dressed in a dark navy suit, white shirt, a navy tie flecked with a gold pattern and a white pocket handkerchief." He looked "the part of a quarterback headed to star-driven" L.A.. His color palette was "close to the Rams.'" Goff said, "I had a few different options but, you know, the navy blue with the gold dots was a little fitting" (L.A. TIMES, 4/29). Style expert Sam Saboura called Goff's look a "little conservative" and said, "I thought ‘Hail to the Chief’ should have started playing." However, he added of Goff, "He looks sharp, very well-tailored. He’s delivering the goods for L.A. He looks sharp” ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 4/29). Goff said of his sartorial tastes, “I am a pretty standard guy. I wore a nice navy suit. I am very happy with it" ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/28).

THE BEST OF THE REST: Saboura noted several players "nodded to their school colors" in their apparel choices, and Baylor WR Corey Coleman, who was drafted by the Browns, "was the most successful." Saboura: "I love how sharp that green looks. I love that deep color. I think of all the guys that wore color tonight. I think he aced it, I think he did the best job. I think he looks very young, very modern, very cool.” Old Miss DE Robert Nkemdiche, who was picked by the Cardinals, looked like "Johnny Cash meets Prince," with Saboura noting he might have paid tribute to the recently passed singer "with those round (sunglasses) frame, a classic Prince look." Saboura: "I love this look. I love the texture and the jacket. I think it’s the right amount of personality, the right amount of accessorizing. He looks sharp, tailored and very, very cool.” Meanwhile, it takes a "real man to wear that white jacket with that gold embroidery" that Notre Dame OT Ronnie Stanley sported. Saboura: "I’m certainly not messing with him, but really it’s all about the shoes. About 10,000 thumb tacks were harmed in the making of these shoes. I think they looked kind of sharp and slick there. I don't know if he's going to wear them again” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 4/29).

CAPTURING THE MOMENT: The TIMES' Freidman notes the opening night of the Draft has "turned into something of a fashion moment" (NYTIMES.com, 4/29). Saboura said while the fashion choices were "not as crazy as last year," there were some "definitely interesting moments" ("SportsCenter," ESPN, 4/29).But ABC's Kimmel “It’s like they know Joan Rivers is not around to make fun of them” ("Jimmy Kimmel Live," ABC, 4/28).
