Rivers, Goodell To Attend Signature-Gathering Event At Site Of Proposed Chargers Stadium

Several current and former Chargers players, along with Chair Dean Spanos, will be in San Diego on Saturday "collecting signatures for a citizens initiative aimed at getting public assistance in building for a downtown stadium and convention center," according to Kevin Acee of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Chargers QB Philip Rivers, former NFLer LaDainian Tomlinson, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Spanos "will attend the event" at 11:00am PT on the site of the proposed project. The pep rally type event will include "food and live music, plus Charger Girls along with the opportunity to register to vote and sign the initiative." Architectural renderings of the proposed building "are complete and will be made public this week, likely in advance of Saturday." The renderings "include a roof on the stadium." However, the final design has "yet to be officially determined." The initiative "needs approximately 67,000 signatures from registered voters in the city of San Diego to qualify for the Nov. 8 ballot." The team "hopes to gather 100,000 signatures by June 8 in order to meet the timeline of getting the signatures ratified" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 4/20).
