Texas AD Perrin Defends Pizza Bidding Process In Wake Of Complaint Of Unfair Negotiations

Texas men's AD Mike Perrin said the negotiation process for a new deal to supply pizza to the school's venues was "a fair and open process" despite a claim by Austin's Pizza that it did not get a fair chance to renew its deal, according to Brian Davis of the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN. Austin's Pizza Owner J.D. Torian "admits he had only a one-year contract to serve cheese, pepperoni and deluxe pizzas at various UT athletic facilities like Royal-Memorial Stadium and Erwin Center." But he "claims he wasn’t given a chance" by UT and IMG "to win the contract again" for the '16-17 academic year. Perrin acknowledged that some IMG contracts "require a business component, not just a vending opportunity." To win the pizza contract, UT "wanted a company to buy advertising (i.e. signage in venues) as well as serve food in the concession stands." Torian said that he "paid $50,000 to IMG for last year’s contract." IMG "later asked him to consider a $100,000 advertising deal inside the basketball arena, something Torian declined." Sources said that DoubleDave's Pizzaworks, the vendor chosen to replace Austin's Pizza, is "willing to spend $75,000." Torian confirmed that he "did not want advertising as part of the initial deal." Austin's Pizza, along with Torchy’s Tacos and Pluckers Wing Bar, were part of former AD Steve Patterson’s "push last summer to bring more local eateries to UT venues." But only Torchy’s Tacos and Pluckers are "expected to return to UT facilities this fall" (AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, 4/19).
