LPGA Hoping Women's PGA Championship Near Seattle Leads To Annual Tour Stop

The KPMG Women's PGA Championship takes place at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash., June 9-12, and LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan said that the event is a "chance to showcase his Tour" to the state, according to Scott Hanson of the SEATTLE TIMES. The Safeco Classic stopped being played there in '99 because it lost its sponsorship, and this year's women's PGA could give Whan a chance to "lure a sponsor that could bring an annual LPGA event back" to the Seattle area. Whan said, "It would be good for the Tour, and it would be good for the area." Hanson noted fans whose "only experience at a pro golf event" was at last year's men's U.S. Open at nearby Chambers Bay "might be surprised at how different it will be at Sahalee, with much greater accessibility for viewing the action." Advance ticket sales for the event "have exceeded expectations," which "does not surprise" Golf Channel host and Washington native Paige Mackenzie. She said, "Seattle has such a strong golf community; they're rabid fans despite a short golf season. I am sure they will rally around this event." Hanson noted the Safeco Classic "was a successful event for 18 years with good galleries." But now the "only annual event nearby" is the LPGA Portland Classic, played from June 30-July 3. Whan said that having an event in the Seattle area around the same time "would be great for the players from a travel perspective" (SEATTLE TIMES, 4/16).
