Broncos, City Of Denver Bid To Host '19 NFL Draft During League's 100th Season

Broncos President & CEO Joe Ellis was in N.Y. last week "in part to discuss with NFL officials -- including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell -- the City of Denver’s desire to host the draft" in '19 for the league’s 100th season, according to Mike Klis of KUSA-NBC. Civic Center Park would "likely be used for a fan rally with the draft itself likely taking place in the Bellco Theater inside the Colorado Convention Center." The Broncos and Denver also "considered hosting the draft" in '17 and '18, but "encountered scheduling conflicts." Chicago will "host the three-day draft in late April for a second consecutive year" (9NEWS.com, 4/15). Denver Sports Commission Exec Dir Matthew Payne said, "The NFL sent out some requests to a lot of cities and we expressed our interest. They reciprocated in saying that they, of course, like Denver as a city. And now it's just really a chance for us to invite them to our city within the year to kind of do a site inspection and talk further about how we can make it work." In Denver, Nicki Jhabvala noted a date "has yet to be set" for the league's visit to Denver (DENVER POST, 4/16). THE MMQB's Peter King writes Denver, Chicago and the Pro Football HOF in Canton, Ohio, "will surely be in contention for future drafts," but the "prime threat" is L.A. There is "no question the NFL would love to put its red carpet in the land that made red carpets famous." There will likely be a "spirited bid" by L.A. for the '17 event (MMQB.SI.com, 4/18).
