Local Officials Confident Hurricanes Will Stay Put; Karmanos Reiterates Stance On Quebec

Centennial Authority Chair Tom McCormick, whose organization operates PNC Arena, said that he "had no concerns" about the Hurricanes leaving Raleigh for Quebec City, according to Chip Alexander of the Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER. Soon after the Hurricanes and Canadiens went through their morning skates on Thursday at PNC Arena, the Centennial Authority "held its board meeting" at the venue. The reports given to the authority members "included that of the finance committee," but there "was no mention of any scuttlebutt" regarding the NHL team. Hurricanes C Jordan Staal said of possible relocation, “It’s completely out of our control, besides trying to win games and get fans in the building. ... Hopefully we can make a move next year and get more fans in the building.” Team Owner Peter Karmanos has "consistently said the Hurricanes, while up for sale, will not be moving and has cited a favorable lease, PNC Arena and the growing Triangle market as reasons for staying put." Karmanos on Thursday said, "I promise this team isn’t going to Quebec." Alexander noted the Hurricanes will finish last in the NHL in home attendance. Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said, "We start winning and people start coming. That’s how it works in this market. We have to win" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 4/9).
