Cavaliers, County Officials Discussing Proposal To Remodel Quicken Loans Arena

The Cavaliers and Cuyahoga County officials are "discussing a proposal" by the team to "provide millions of dollars to renovate the exterior" of Quicken Loans Arena, according to Karen Farkas of the Cleveland PLAIN DEALER. In exchange, the Cavaliers' lease of the facility -- which runs through '27 -- "could be extended." The team last year "suggested splitting with the county the cost of a multimillion-dollar overhaul of the exterior" of the arena as part of a project to "increase the building's square footage." The proposed project, estimated in '15 to cost $140M, would "expand the facility to add more public space and give the concrete building a glass exterior." County Finance Committee Chair David Greenspan in an email wrote, "To date, no formal proposals have been submitted to council for consideration." Farkas noted the county last fall financed $60.4M "worth of repairs and upgrades" to Progressive Field and the arena that included a new scoreboard for the Indians and a new roof for the Cavaliers. The county was "obligated to cover repair costs per its respective leases" with the Indians and the Cavaliers. But an expansion "would be above and beyond" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 3/30).
