NBA Kings Seek Stability By Giving Vlade Divac Multiyear Contract Extension

The NBA Kings have signed VP/Basketball Operations & GM Vlade Divac to a multiyear contract extension, a "sign of stability for a franchise that desperately needs it," according to Joe Davidson of the SACRAMENTO BEE. Divac was "initially named to this role in August." He said, "We’re trying to create a stable organization. We can’t do everything overnight. But step by step, we’re moving in the right direction." Davidson notes the Kings "parted with GM Pete D’Alessandro in June and have not added anyone with significant experience to the front office to replace him." Mike Bratz was promoted to Assistant GM and Peja Stojakovic was brought on as Dir of Player Personnel & Development, but is "new in an NBA executive role." Divac "has spoken to" Bucks Assistant GM David Morway, who also has served as Pacers GM, about joining the organization. Divac: “It’s like creating a team -- you have to create a front office. I’m open to discussing (front-office help) with talented people around the league. Yes, I’ve talked to some people" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 3/31). ESPN.com's Marc Stein cited sources as saying that Morway "has emerged as the leading candidate to join the organization" alongside Divac. Morway "spent 13 seasons with the Pacers" before moving to Milwaukee in '13 (ESPN.com, 3/30).

SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN: ESPN's Mike Greenberg said if Kings Owner Vivek Ranadive believes in Divac, then "give him an extension, let everybody know it’s going to be his vision." Greenberg: "Hitch your horse to a wagon you believe in and follow it, because if you just keep changing stuff every other day, it’s never going to work." ESPN's Mike Golic: "If you’re going to give him the job, give him the job and let him make decisions” (“Mike & Mike,” ESPN Radio, 3/31).
