Mark Cuban Envisions State-Of-The-Art Arena After Lease Expires At American Airlines Center

Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban's vision is to "potentially have a new state of the art arena for his club when the current lease with American Airlines Center expires in 14 years," according to Dwain Price of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. Cuban said, “That’s not to take anything away from the arena. But in 14 years my dream -- and this is like the long, long, long, long, long, long shot -- is to build an arena that’s 20 stories up in the air where every seat has a view of downtown (Dallas), whether that’s north, south, east or west. ... It’s taking a page from ballparks like Pittsburgh and other places that have amazing views.” Cuban stressed that it is "not a sure thing that the Mavs will leave AAC when their contract expires." He added that the new arena "would 'absolutely positively' be built in downtown Dallas." Cuban: "The reality is, there’s nothing wrong with the arena. It’s the parking and everything around it. I’m less worried about the curb appeal than customer satisfaction." Meanwhile, Cuban said of a new practice facility for the team, "It’ll just be basketball operations, orthopedics, medical, scientific, all the future bio-analytics. All that kind of stuff that we want to stay ahead of. If there’s a new advanced MRI machine, it’s going to go there.” Cuban "hopes to break ground on that building this summer, but hasn’t found a location yet" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 3/31). Cuban said that "issues with parking and recent commercial development around AAC have him looking for extra acres on which to build a new arena." He said, "The place we're looking at would have to have a lot of parking, because we haven't really gotten much support from local builders for our parking. That's one of the reasons we'll look at potential relocation. ... We're going to want a better situation than we've got now" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 3/31).

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS: In Dallas, Brad Townsend noted Texas A&M graduate architecture students "are designing the Mavericks 'state-of-the-art, multipurpose' practice facility," with input from Cuban and HKS Principal Bryan Trubey. HKS is best-known "as the lead architect of AT&T Stadium." (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 3/30). Texas A&M professor Michael O'Brien said, “It’s not like the students’ work will get built, but the client’s insights are invaluable to the students’ education" (DALLASNEWS.com, 3/29).
