Danish Architect Shares Vision For New Redskins Stadium, Including Moat Concept

Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, who the Redskins have hired to design a new stadium, said the concept for the venue comes "complete with a moat" for kayaking tailgaters, according to CBS' Morley Safer. Ingels' eponymous design firm was profiled on last night’s edition of CBS’ “60 Minutes," with Safer noting, "Ingels believes his success comes from his ability to combine the practical with the fantastical" ("60 Minutes," CBS, 3/13). In DC, Jonathan O'Connell noted Redskins Owner Dan Snyder has "previously talked about wanting to do something innovative in terms of a new stadium." Building a new venue "designed by one of the buzziest names in architecture could give Snyder the opportunity to host the Super Bowl, something he has pined for since becoming owner." O'Connell noted Ingles' proposal has an undulating roofline that seems "reminiscent of RFK Stadium," the venue where Snyder "grew up attending games, but the new version at this point is a long way from getting built." Although elected officials from DC, Maryland and Virginia have all "expressed interest in helping Snyder build a new stadium, negotiations on where a new stadium would be located or how it would be paid for have not advanced beyond the early stages." The Redskins play at FedExField in Landover, Md. on a lease that expires in '27 (WASHINGTON POST, 3/12). In Richmond, Michael Phillips reports the Redskins are "believed to be considering several sites, including some in Virginia's Loudoun County, some in Maryland near National Harbor, and most prominently, the land currently occupied by RFK Stadium." Redskins President Bruce Allen previously said that other teams have "found it to be a 10-year process from announcing a stadium to completion" (RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH, 3/14).
