Judge Pushing For Settlement Between Riddell, Former NFL Players

A concussion settlement “could be in play for NFL helmet maker Riddell,” according to Josh Kosman of the N.Y. POST. U.S. District Judge Anita Brody, who is “overseeing the settlement between thousands of former players and the NFL," gave individual players the ability "to sue Riddell late last year.” Brody said that players “had until Jan. 29 to file claims.” Sources said that with roughly 100 players “planning to file concussion-related suits against Riddell, Brody has decided to consolidate the cases in her court with the goal of reaching a settlement.” Kosman notes as the NFL’s official helmet maker from ’89-‘14, Riddell is “facing major liabilities associated with gridiron concussions” (N.Y. POST, 2/8).

NOT-SO-SAFE BET? In Las Vegas, Ed Graney wrote ESPN's John Clayton “isn't so sure anything will help the Las Vegas cause when it comes to chasing an NFL dream.” Clayton said, “A lot of old-school owners go back to a time when they remember days of fixing games in sports and betting scandals with Pete Rose, and they would be worried about their football players living in Las Vegas. As a city, they love Las Vegas. But their concern would be how players would react in such an environment” (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 2/6). In Boston, Ben Volin wrote, “Just so we’re clear on the NFL’s attitudes toward Las Vegas -- Tony Romo and the [NFLPA] hosting a fantasy football convention in Vegas: bad. Raiders owner Mark Davis speaking with Vegas officials about a potential stadium location: good. Yet another area in which the league has inconsistent policies” (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/7).
