Super Bowl Names In The News: Panthers Owner Profiled; Coldplay Talks Halftime Show

ESPN.com's David Newton profiled Panthers Owner JERRY RICHARDSON as someone who "stays in the background." Richardson "seldom, if ever, talks to reporters, letting his coaches and players take the credit." But Richardson "commands respect," and even people he has fired or parted with "remain loyal, expressing compliments instead of bitterness." Cowboys Owner JERRY JONES said, "He's one of the great owners of all time. He's outstanding, very knowledgeable about the NFL, and it's very fitting that he's got the quality of team that he's got. He's really put it together" (ESPN.com, 2/1). In Pittsburgh, Mark Kaboly wrote under the header, "Richardson's Panthers Patterned After Steelers' Rooney Way." Richardson and Steelers Chair DAN ROONEY "are good friends." So, it is "not surprising that there are many similarities on how the Steelers run their organization and how Richardson runs his." Panthers WR JERICHO COTCHERY, who previously played for the Steelers, said, "The owners are really close. Carolina has modeled itself after Pittsburgh and what a wonderful model. It is the same atmosphere as in a real family-type atmosphere where everybody loves playing with one another" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 2/4).

ALL HE DOES IS WIN: Broncos Exec VP & GM JOHN ELWAY "runs the Broncos' personnel department," and his current position "makes him an outlier among his 28 peers who are Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks: Successful NFL executive." Since Elway re-joined the Broncos in '11, the team "has 58 regular season wins (second-most), five AFC West titles and two conference championships." What "helped Elway tremendously was leaning on his personnel staff," including Dir of Player Personnel MATT RUSSELL and Dir of Pro Personnel TOM HECKERT, as well as "his playing experience to evaluate talent and how they fit into the Broncos’ culture" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 2/5). Elway's approach has "produced splendid results for the Broncos since he took over their front office" (SPORTSONEARTH.com, 2/5).

TAKING NOTES: A group led by Minnesota Super Bowl LII Host Committee CEO MAUREEN BAUSCH is in S.F. "viewing the festivities." The contingent includes staff from the committee as well as reps from Meet Minneapolis, the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce and the Vikings. U.S. Bank CEO and Super Bowl LII Host Committee Chair RICHARD DAVIS is "arriving this weekend," as are Greater MSP CEO MICHAEL LANGLEY and Meet Minneapolis CEO MELVIN TENANT. Bausch has already "laid out some very preliminary ideas for the Super Bowl in Minneapolis, including a downtown cross country ski trail, a snowmobile jump on Nicollet Mall and an event related to the start" of the '18 Winter Games (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/4).

YELLOW PAGES
COLDPLAY on Thursday "crossed the stage to loud applause for the Super Bowl 50 Pepsi Halftime Show press conference." Frontman CHRIS MARTIN talked about the band's decision to "invite Beyonce to perform with them after the NFL asked Coldplay to honor the past, present and future with their performance." He said, "The way we're sort of honoring the past is by asking some of the people whose halftime shows we've really loved, and Beyonce's of course is right up there, I think most people would agree. And so we just felt like asking her would be appropriate" (BILLBOARD.com, 2/4). Guitarist JONNY BUCKLAND "acknowledged the enormity of the show." He said, "We were staggered, to be honest. Nothing is bigger for a band." Meanwhile, Martin was asked what might be Coldplay's "Left Shark" moment, a reference to a gaffe during KATY PERRY's halftime show last year. He deadpanned, "You mean, which part of our show will f--- up terribly?" (ESPN.com, 2/4).
