Names In The News

In DC, Hobson & Moyer report Broncos QB PEYTON MANNING's lawyers launched a "private probe" shortly after Al Jazeera "started contacting athletes who would be named" in its report on HGH. Manning's lawyers "hired investigators to identify, locate and interrogate" the documentary's original source, pharmacist CHARLIE SLY, and "sent a lawyer to examine" the medical records of Manning and his wife, ASHLEY, at the Guyer Institute of Molecular Medicine. Manning's adviser and crisis communications consultant ARI FLEISCHER said that the investigative team "did nothing that would interfere with subsequent investigations." Fleischer said that the lawyer who "visited the Guyer Institute did not remove any records," and Manning’s investigators in no way "influenced or coerced Sly into issuing his recanting statement." Fleischer said that Manning's pre-emptive investigation "was a 'natural reaction' to being asked to respond to anonymous allegations" (WASHINGTON POST, 2/5).

ADDED TO THE LIST: Former NHL player and referee PAUL STEWART was one of 12 names added Thursday to the NHL’s concussion lawsuit. Stewart now "suffers from depressive and anxiety disorders, anger, impulse and temper control issues and a loss of memory." He also "has had a brain tumor," which was "removed from his brain at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston" last April. Stewart said that he "receives a pension of about $19,000 a year and wants to make sure his family is taken care of if his health deteriorates" (THEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 2/4).

WE ARE WARRIORS: The Warriors on Thursday "were the guests of honor" at the White House to celebrate their NBA championship. A number of Bay Area politicians were in attendance, including Oakland Mayor LIBBY SCHAAF and former Speaker of the House Minority Leader NANCY PELOSI. PREISDENT OBAMA "peppered his remarks with humor directed in a variety of directions," pointing out G STEPHEN CURRY’s 51-point performance against the Wizards on Wednesday "amounted to him 'clowning' his hometown team." Coach STEVE KERR "presented the president with a Warriors jersey -- No. 44, representative of the 44th president" (CSNBAYAREA.com, 2/4).

NAMES: DC-based real estate developer JAMES NOZAR will "take over" Lightning Owner JEFF VINIK's project to redevelop downtown Tampa next month when he "becomes CEO of Strategic Property Partners." The project is a "joint venture between" Vinik and BILL GATES' Cascade Investment. As CEO, Nozar will be "charged with bringing to fruition Strategic Property Partners' plans to develop 40 acres at the southern end of downtown Tampa." He joins the company at a "key juncture for the project, as it moves from planning to construction." Nozar replaces NFL COO TOD LEIWEKE, who "ran the Lightning as well as the real estate project" (TAMPA BAY TIMES, 2/5)....Red Sox P DAVID PRICE on Thursday "celebrated fundraising efforts for a Miracle Field for disabled ball players by donating $300,000." The event "included a groundbreaking ceremony for the future Miracle Field at the McKnight Park grounds" in Murfreesboro, Tenn. (DAILY NEWS JOURNAL, 2/5)....Actor STEPHEN JAMES, who depicts JESSE OWENS in the new film "RACE" that covers the late Olympian's "record breaking triumphs" at the '36 Berlin Games, said Owens’ daughters "were in tears after the first screening of the film" in DC (WASHINGTON POST, 2/5).
