Michigan's Signing Day Event Draws More Than 170,000 Unique Views At Players' Tribune

The Players’ Tribune’s exclusive live-streaming of the Univ. of Michigan's National Signing Day "Signing with the Stars" event generated more than 170,000 unique views. The average duration of watch time was 30 minutes and the live event was viewed for a total of more than 3.6 million minutes, according to TPT. The event was hosted by UM football coach Jim Harbaugh and featured many sports stars and personalities, including Patriots QB and Michigan alum Tom Brady and former MLBer and TPT founder Derek Jeter. “The event itself exceeded expectations,” TPT President Jaymee Messler said. “This event gave us a glimpse at what the future of Signing Day will entail. This will be a model for NSD moving forward and we're proud to have partnered with Michigan to co-produce and amplify the event." TPT last year announced a partnership with the UM athletic department to produce exclusive content involving three varsity programs -- football, softball and men’s basketball (Liz Mullen, Staff Writer).

MAKING CONNECTIONS: Harbaugh appeared on syndicated Michigan radio show "The Huge Show" on Wednesday and talked about the "Signing with the Stars" event, saying it "felt great." Harbaugh: "Some people want to criticize that, marginalize it, diminish it. It wasn’t over the top. It was connecting with people, and that’s a good thing no matter what anybody says. If that offends people, then so be it. It was one of my best days of my life. I had more fun today than I can remember in a long, long time" ("The Huge Show," 2/3). ESPN’s Butch Davis said Harbaugh is “recruiting and coaching outside the box" and doing a “lot of creative type of things that creates an awful lot of buzz about the program.” He said coaches are “going to have to take a long, hard look at the things that they’re doing." While some coaches "won’t change because they’ve obviously got programs that don’t need to change,” many other programs are "going to have to think long and hard about how are we going to be able to get these kids’ attention” (“College Football Live,” ESPN2, 2/4). But ESPN’s Jemele Hill said the UM event “feels beneath Jim Harbaugh, and it honestly feels beneath Michigan.” Hill: “I just don’t understand why we are building all this fanfare around these 18-year-olds, many of whose names I will not remember in three years nor will most of us" (“His & Hers,” ESPN2, 2/4).
