NFL Taking Texans-Raiders Game To Mexico City As Part Of Expanded Int'l Series

The Raiders will host the Texans during a "regular-season game in Mexico City next season," the first such game in the country since '05, according to John McClain of the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. The game, which will be played at the 95,500-seat Estadio Azteca, comes as the NFL "wants to expand its international series" outside the U.K. Texans Owner Bob McNair and President Jamey Rootes "asked the NFL to get the Texans involved in the international series, preferably in Mexico City because they have a growing fan base in Mexico and want to expand their brand." McNair has "insisted he won't give up a home game at NRG Stadium but would like to play a road game in Mexico City" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 2/5). A date for the Texans-Raiders game has "not yet been determined," as the league's schedule "comes out in the spring" (AP, 2/4). ESPN.com's Tania Ganguli wrote the Texans have "long touted their Mexican fan base, an area the NFL wants to expand, and next year's Super Bowl is set to be held in Houston." Houston's proximity to Mexico and "ability to draw Mexican fans to Super Bowl LI festivities was part of the pitch" that city officials and McNair "made to win the championship game" (ESPN.com, 2/4). ESPN’s Michael Wilbon said of the Texans and Raiders playing a game in Mexico City, “I like playing in Mexico. There seems to be a bigger NFL fan base there” (“PTI,” ESPN, 2/4). ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Mexico is “fanatical about football, and that is going to be a hugely popular game" (“NFL Insiders,” ESPN, 2/4).
