MLB Franchise Notes: Royals Move Ring Ceremony To Second Game For Local TV

The K.C. STAR cited a source as saying that the Royals will raise their '15 World Series championship flag “before they open the season April 3 at Kauffman Stadium, but the players will have to wait until the second game to receive their rings.” The split “will allow television viewers in Kansas City to see the entire ring ceremony.” That “would not have been possible on ESPN’s national broadcast.” FS K.C. is “expected to broadcast the April 5 game” that will include the ring ceremony (K.C. STAR, 2/4).

CHOP SHOP: In Atlanta, Mark Meltzer cited a securing filing by Braves parent company Liberty Media as showing that the team lost $16M in the first nine months of ’15, on revenue of $227M. For the same January to September period of ‘14, the Braves lost $26M on revenue of $242M. The Braves full-year results for ‘15 are “expected to be released later this month.” When the Braves won the NL East in ’13, they took in $260M in revenue with an operating profit of $7M, but revenue slipped to $250M in ’14 when the team missed the playoffs (BIZJOURNALS.com, 2/4).

GROWTH CHART: Giants President & CEO Larry Baer said while the team is "not going to double" its payroll anytime soon, it will "go up each year a little bit." Baer said, "Assuming things are going well, the revenue is there, and we think that is a good business model and we think that allows you to win every year.” He added, “Our point is we basically want to continue to grow payroll as we grow revenues, run it like a sort of a predictable business so that the fans know that we are always going to take a really good shot at being competitive. We are fourth or fifth in payroll in baseball, and we think that's fine” (“High Heat,” MLB Network, 2/2).
