MLS Considering Downtown St. Louis Site For Expansion Team, With Eye On '20 Season

MLS Commissioner Don Garber on Thursday said that the league "will begin searching for a stadium site in St. Louis and planning for its financing and operations immediately," according to a front-page piece by David Hunn of the ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Garber said that he was "'very excited" by the idea of an expansion team playing on the St. Louis riverfront," which was the proposed site for a new Rams stadium. Garber also said that MLS would "begin gathering potential owners," and multiple local individuals "have contacted him as well as St. Louis civic leaders." But Garber "made no promises." He said that "now is the time to find out" about the city's potential to host a club. Garber earlier Thursday "met in the league’s New York City offices" with former Dave Peacock, who helped lead the St. Louis stadium task force for the Rams planned venue. Garber said that the league "has long been considering St. Louis as an expansion site." He said now is the "right time" for St. Louis. Garber added that a team in St. Louis "could kick off" as soon as '20. There are "several competitors for an expansion team." Garber said that MLS is also is "looking at" Sacramento, San Diego, San Antonio and Detroit (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 2/5).
