Columbus Group Petitions Ohio For $5M In Funds For Browns Training Camp Move

The Browns and non-profit group Columbus Partnership "have asked the state to help pay" $5M to "build a practice facility for the Browns and move the football team’s summer training camp to a spot" at Ohio State, according to a front-page piece by Sullivan & Siegel of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH. Columbus Partnership "made the request of the state to be funded in the biennial state capital improvements bill that will be proposed in the next few months." The request "does not guarantee state approval." Regardless, the team in a statement said its '16 training camp "will remain in its facility in Berea," where it has held camp since '92. The governor’s budget office is "expected to introduce the capital budget in early April, and lawmakers hope to pass it before they leave for campaigning in June." A budget office spokesperson said that it "has not been settled how much money will be available for community projects such as athletic facilities, museums and parks." Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam III "has been meeting with area leaders, including elected officials with the city of Columbus and Franklin County commissioners, to bring the team’s annual summer training camp to Columbus" (COLUMBUS DISPATCH, 2/5).
