Red Sox DH David Ortiz "will have his batting stance immortalized on a collector’s edition silk Tommy Bahama shirt, complete with his home run swing and his career highlights in front of the Green Monster," according to Kate Feldman of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Tommy Bahama CEO Doug Wood said, “When we heard David was retiring it made sense he should be on a special edition. We wanted a piece of that.” Feldman noted 550-650 shirts will be made and retail for $250. They will debut in Naples, Fla., on March 21 during an autograph event with Ortiz at a Tommy Bahama store and restaurant. Twenty percent of the proceeds from the store that day "will go to the David Ortiz Children’s Fund." He will become "the first active player with his mug on a Tommy Bahama shirt" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 2/2). In Boston, Peter Abraham notes Tommy Bahama has made MLB-licensed individual team and spring training shirts "for years as part of their line." Wood: “I’m trying to deliver upscale product to baseball fans, somebody age 40 and up and who loves the game. This is different than a team jersey. It’s something special" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/3).
