Univ. Of Illinois Closing In On Potential New AD, Interviews Seven Candidates This Week

The Univ. of Illinois "hopes to finalize its search" for a new AD after "concluding interviews with seven candidates this week in Indianapolis," according to a source cited by Shannon Ryan of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson and the school's search committee met Monday and yesterday "with the potential hires" -- Northern Illinois Associate VP & AD Sean Frazier, Eastern Illinois AD Tom Michael, Washington Univ.-St. Louis AD Josh Whitman, Central Michigan AD Dave Heeke, FAU VP & AD Patrick Chun, Maryland Deputy AD & COO Kelly Mehrtens and Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley. UI is "still pitching the job to Colorado AD Rick George, who played football for the Illini and has publicly stated he plans to remain in Boulder." A source said that UI "also targeted Northwestern AD Jim Phillips, who declined to interview." The school is "most interested in candidates with Illini ties, which includes Michael, Whitman, Tiley and Mehrtens." A source said that each candidate "met with the search committee for about 90 minutes and with Wilson for 30 to 45 minutes" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 2/3).

NEW DIRECTION: Montana State AD Peter Fields "is on his way out" after 14 years. MSU yesterday announced that it "will not renew Fields' contract, which expires June 30." Fields will "continue his duties as AD until then" (BILLINGS GAZETTE, 2/3).
