Paul Azinger Tapped To Replace Greg Norman In Fox' Golf Broadcast Booth

Fox this morning officially announced Paul Azinger will replace Greg Norman as the lead analyst for the net's golf telecasts. Azinger will join Joe Buck and Brad Faxon in the 18th tower for the U.S. Open, Women's Open and Senior Open, as well as the U.S. Amateur championship and the '17 Walker Cup (Fox). GOLF DIGEST's Jaime Diaz noted Azinger previously "was an analyst for ABC golf telecasts, where he teamed with Nick Faldo, and has most recently been an analyst for ESPN’s telecasts of the Masters, the U.S. Open and the British Open" (GOLFDIGEST.com, 1/26). GOLF.com's Gary Van Sickle reported Faxon, who "shined during last year's U.S. Women's Open telecast, and Buck will reportedly split the host roles on odd- and even-numbered holes with Azinger adding color commentary" (GOLF.com, 1/26). The AP's Doug Ferguson noted Azinger in just 10 years "already has made his mark as an analyst for his candor and blunt observations." The deal "reunites Azinger with Fox golf producer Mark Loomis," who was at ABC in '05 when he put Azinger and Faldo together in the booth with Mike Tirico (AP, 1/26).

GREAT WHITE OUT: GOLF.com's Alan Bastable noted Norman "didn't see" his departure from Fox' golf coverage after just one year coming. Norman said, "I can honestly say that I am shocked and surprised." Fox execs have "not said why they axed Norman after just one year in the booth." But when news of his dismissal broke, a Fox source said that Norman "didn't adequately prepare for the broadcasts." Norman did "not expound on how the network explained his firing to him, but he did say that he 'appreciated' the way" Fox Sports President & COO Eric Shanks handled the process (GOLF.com, 1/22). SBJ/SBD Exec Editor Abe Madkour wonders whether Norman's short tenure at Fox should have been anticipated.
