Sources: Penguins Co-Owners Lemieux, Burkle At Odds Over Team Price; Sale Called Off

Penguins co-Owner Mario Lemieux is "miffed" at co-Owner Ron Burkle for "messing up the sale" of the Penguins, according to Josh Kosman of the N.Y. POST. Sources said that after six months of "trying to sell the team, the two men -- both significant minority owners of the NHL team -- recently called off the sale." A source said that Lemieux, who owns roughly 40% of the team, and Burkle, with a 25% stake, "initially were looking to get" more than $700M for the Penguins and the team's old Civic Arena site. Sources said that the team "did attract a bid recently that Lemieux wanted to accept -- but Burkle turned it aside." One source said, "It is consistent with my understanding that (Lemieux) and Burkle had different asking prices." Another source added that the "strategic review was prompted by Lemieux wanting a little liquidity" (N.Y. POST, 1/14).
