CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK: In Boston, Mallory Abreu wrote Big Papi's Kitchen tortilla chips, named for Red Sox DH David Ortiz, are "shaped like home plate and ideal for scooping." A portion of all sales "goes toward the David Ortiz Children's Fund, which works in New England" and Ortiz' native Dominican Republic (BOSTONGLOBE.com, 1/5).

HAIR METTLE: In Chicago, Phil Rosenthal writes former NFLer Brian Urlacher has "gained a full head of hair and given up the sort of distinctive look so coveted in the ad game in which he now plays." This "doesn't necessarily spell the end of Urlacher as adman," as this is an age in which "personal transformations are celebrated." But an "on-screen identifier might help, because recognizing the ex-linebacker will take a moment" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 1/6).
