Sister Act: Red Sox Unveil New Mascot Sibling For Wally The Green Monster

The Red Sox yesterday unveiled a new mascot named Tessie, the "little sister" of longtime mascot Wally the Green Monster, according to Nick O'Malley of the Springfield REPUBLICAN. The team "showed off Tessie in an introductory video, depicting Wally heading south to Florida to visit his 'parents' (a pair of mom and pop looking Green Monsters) as well as his sister." Tessie's name is "derived from Red Sox lore -- a song that dates back before even Fenway Park." "Tessie" started out as a 1902 Broadway tune that was "sung by the Royals Rooters cheering section for the then-named Boston Americans back in 1903." The song was "given new life" in 2004 when the Dropkick Murphys released a new version (MASSLIVE.com, 1/5). MLB.com's Chris Landers noted fans can get their "first glimpse" of the new mascot at Boston's Winter Weekend Jan. 22-24 (MLB.com, 1/5). In Boston, Kevin Slane wrote whether Tessie will be a full-time participant at games in '16 is "unclear, but for her sake let’s hope she gets a warmer reception than Wally did" (BOSTON.com, 1/5).
