Overnights Ratings: Rose Bowl Could See Lowest Audience On Record With Stanford-Iowa

The New Year’s Six bowls saw overnight ratings drop 13% from last season. The Rose Bowl drew a 7.9 overnight on ESPN on New Year’s Day for Stanford’s 45-16 win over Iowa, marking what could be the event’s lowest figure on record. Last year’s Rose Bowl was one of the inaugural CFP semifinals. But looking back to ’14, the Stanford-Michigan State Rose Bowl drew an 11.2 overnight, while the ’13 game featuring Stanford-Wisconsin drew a 9.6. Meanwhile, the Allstate Sugar Bowl drew a 5.3 overnight for Ole Miss’ win over Oklahoma State, marking the lowest-rated primetime New Year’s Day bowl since the creation of the BCS. Last year’s Sugar Bowl was the other CFP semifinal. In '14, the Alabama-Oklahoma Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2 drew a 9.3 overnight, while Florida-Louisville in ’13 drew a 6.4. Ohio State’s win in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl on New Year’s Day drew a 6.2 overnight, up from a 5.3 for Boise State-Arizona on New Year’s Eve in ’14, but down from a 7.2 for UCF-Baylor on New Year’s Day in primetime the season before.

The chart below lists overnight ratings on broadcast TV from New Year’s weekend.
