Momentum Builds To Move Men's NCAA Lacrosse Championship Off Memorial Day

There is a "growing sentiment among college coaches that the men's lacrosse championship does not need to be held on Memorial Day," and that moving the NCAA title weekend into June "needs to be on the table in order to stem attendance issues," according to Matt Kinnear of INSIDE LACROSSE. During the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association Convention, one coach said that talk of moving the game off Memorial Day has occurred "more than ever." Sources said that the idea has "progressed from outside-the-box idea to a growing reality." The NCAA Championship "will remain" on Memorial Day through at least '18, "as the bid process for those games has already started." Delaware coach Bob Shillinglaw said, "There’s definitely some concern that with Memorial Day Weekend, with more games being exposed on television, is it easier to maybe just go to the semifinals, get two great games in, stay home and not travel and watch the game on TV Monday. ... The lacrosse committee is looking very close at baseball, other sports who have moved off of Memorial Day weekend and attendance has gone up as a result of that. There’s definitely a lot of analyzing going on of what’s going to make the tournament the best tournament." Kinnear noted there are a number of options, the "least impact of which is pushing the championship game a week later and everything else" staying as is. Albany coach Scott Marr proposed a further shift into summer, saying, "I’d like to see it the second week of June. Start our tournament on Memorial Day with the first-round games, then go the next two weeks with our Quarterfinals and Final Four the second weekend in June" (INSIDELACROSSE.com, 12/19).
