DraftKings Delays Launch Into U.K. Until Early Next Year Despite Already Having License

DraftKings yesterday acknowledged that the company has "again delayed the launch" of its DFS contests in the U.K., a "setback to its overseas expansion efforts," according to Dan Adams of the BOSTON GLOBE. DraftKings had previously said that its games "would be available in the U.K." by the end of '15. But it has now "pushed back the debut until early next year." Unlike in the U.S., where a debate "is raging about whether daily fantasy contests for cash are a form of illegal gambling, the U.K. permits many forms of gambling, including online betting on sports matches." Earlier this year, DraftKings "applied for and received a license from the U.K.’s Gambling Commission." The delayed launch "means DraftKings will miss out on a busy period in British soccer," when the EPL "hosts additional games during the holidays." That still leaves time for DraftKings "to launch before the popular UEFA Champions League tournament resumes in February." The company "expects soccer matches will be its most popular offering" in the U.K. But DraftKings said that it "may add other sports that are popular there, such as cricket and rugby" (BOSTON GLOBE, 12/17).
