USA Water Polo Splits Apparel Rights Between Competition And Training/Warmup

USA Water Polo has restructured its apparel sponsorship package for the upcoming Olympic year, splitting rights between in-pool competition gear and training/warmup clothing. In a deal that will be announced today, Turbo will return as the team’s official competition gear supplier for the Rio Games, reprising a role it played in the '12 London Games. But to accomplish that, the NGB had to alter its relationship with a main Turbo competitor. Tyr signed a four-year deal in '13 to be the official outfitting partner, a category that comprised both out-of-pool clothing and competitive suits. After today, Tyr will continue to be known as the official outfitter and training apparel supplier. “It could have been their prerogative to not work together and cooperate, but we’re thankful for them for working with us and working with Turbo, and everyone coming together to find a good agreement where everyone gets to provide some great things for the national team and for Water Polo,” USA Water Polo Dir of Communications Greg Mescall said. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the split deal does generate additional revenue for the NGB, Mescall said. Both deals will expire in spring '17. Water polo gear is a comparatively new venture for Tyr, which also holds sponsorship deals with USA Swimming, USA Triathlon and others. “Turbo’s a known entity,” Mescall said. “You know what you’re getting with those folks." USA Water Polo took a similar tack in '12, making Turbo the competition gear partner, but signing separate deals for workout, lifestyle and warmup apparel with Katin USA and Athleta. The NGB's sponsorship roster includes Liberty Mutual, American Pistachios, Nesquik and Powerbar, among others.
