People & Personalities: Antawn Jamison Joining CSN Mid-Atlantic For Wizards Coverage

In DC, Dan Steinberg reported former NBAer Antawn Jamison "will join CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Wizards broadcast team 15 times over the remainder of this season: 10 times as an analyst on the pregame and postgame shows, and five times as an in-game analyst" alongside play-by-play man Steve Buckhantz and analyst Phil Chenier. Jamison "has done studio work for Lakers games in recent seasons, and that work will continue." The new in-game color job starts tomorrow night "when the Wizards host the Lakers." Jamison's "entire schedule with CSN isn’t settled yet, but he’ll work in spurts for travel purposes." Tonight, he will "make his local studio debut." Buckhantz said that it will be "incumbent on him to work Jamison into the conversation and direct traffic, but he said the player he knew should make for a comfortable transition" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 11/27).

MAKING THE ROUNDS: In Chicago, Ed Sherman profiled former NFL coach Dave Wannstedt, whose weekly schedule includes commutes to L.A. to "be a studio analyst for Fox Sports' college football coverage." On Sundays mornings, he "appears on Fox's early NFL pregame show, 'NFL Kickoff.'" Then Wannstedt "immediately returns to Chicago, usually watching the Bears game on the plane, so he can make a Sunday night appearance" on CSN Chicago. He also has "regular weekly spots" on Big Ten Network and CSN Chicago, including "Pro Football Weekly." What "stands out for Wannstedt is the passion that he brings to his on-air analysis." On TV, his head "bobs as he emphatically makes a point," and even on radio, he "speaks with such intensity, you almost can see his arms waving" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/30).

K.C. MASTERPIECE: In K.C., Sam Mellinger noted Pro Football HOFer Len Dawson is in his 50th year in broadcasting, and he "has been, in many ways, the Chiefs' frontman for half a century straight now -- first as the Super Bowl winning quarterback, and now" as a broadcaster for KMBC-TV and as the Chiefs radio color analyst. Dawson "began broadcasting in the prime of his playing career, essentially as a publicity stunt for the Chiefs to sell tickets," but he "turned the fluke broadcasting opportunity into a lifetime job." Execs in N.Y. "saw his work on KMBC, and asked him to help start something called 'Inside the NFL' on HBO." Dawson became one of the nation’s "most recognizable voices and analysts on football as the show [grew] into prominence" (KANSASCITY.com, 11/28).

ONE LAST DEADLINE: The CHARLOTTE OBSERVER's Tom Sorensen wrote that after 35 years, his "final column" for the paper will run Dec. 11 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 11/29)....The Red Wings during Sunday's game against the Panthers "put together a special tribute" for Detroit Free Press photographer Julian Gonzalez, who has covered the team for 25 years. Gonzalez, who is "retiring after taking a voluntary buyout, is leaving the Free Press" this month (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 11/30).
