League Notes

In N.Y., Tim Rohan notes MLB "covers up to $1,500 of the cost of each ring for members of the World Series-winning team," but the team that loses the championship "often gives itself rings" at its own expense. It is "unclear when that practice started." NHL teams that "lose out on hoisting the Stanley Cup do not typically hand out rings," nor do NBA teams that lose in the finals. The NFL "pays for 150 rings for the Super Bowl runner-up, but, by rule, the cost can at most be half of what the league pays for the winner’s rings" (N.Y. TIMES, 12/1).

WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM THIS: ESPN.com's Nate Saunders noted F1 driver Lewis Hamilton thinks there is "a lot" that his sport "can learn from NASCAR, especially the access it gives to the fans." Hamilton: "There are definitely things they do a lot better than us ... for sure that we could learn from them." He added of last month's season-ending Sprint Cup race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, "It was a great show. ... Fans can get close to the garages in the background, to the drivers" (ESPN.com, 11/26).

ARMED AND READY: In Detroit, George Hunter reported Detroit police union officials "are expressing their opposition to an NFL policy that prohibits off-duty cops from bringing firearms into stadiums, saying the rule puts lives in danger." The Detroit Police Officers Association, Lieutenants & Sergeants Association and the Command Officers Association in a letter wrote, "This policy is ill-advised and should be rescinded." DPOA President Mark Diaz said that two animal rights protesters who ran onto the field at Ford Field toward the end of Thursday’s nationally televised Eagles-Lions game "further hammered home the possibility of violence at a game" (DETROIT NEWS, 11/28).
