People & Personalities: KU Play-By-Play Voice Bob Davis Retiring After Hoops Season

In Kansas, Gary Bedore reported Univ. of Kansas radio play-by-play announcer Bob Davis "will retire following the current hoops season" after 32 years of calling men's basketball and football games. That means this Saturday’s game against Kansas State "will be his last football broadcast for the Jayhawk Radio Network." Davis joined the school's broadcast team in '84 and "broadcast eight of the Jayhawks’ 14 NCAA Final Four appearances," including the '88 and '08 national championships. A nationwide search for Davis’ successor "will begin in the spring" (LAWRENCE JOURNAL-WORLD, 11/25). In K.C., Rustin Dodd writes Davis "also left an indelible mark as a long-time broadcaster" with the Royals. He spent 16 years broadcasting the MLB team's games before announcing his retirement "from his Royals duties" in February '13 (K.C. STAR, 11/25).

FILLETING THE FISH: In Ft. Lauderdale, Craig Davis notes the Marlins' decision to not renew the contract of TV analyst Tommy Hutton after 19 seasons is the "latest wave of disdain that has dogged the franchise in recent years." Hutton "provided continuity through a turbulent history of ownership changes, fan unrest and two World Series championships." He was "not shy about leveling harsh critiques at the Marlins when their play warranted." While his honesty in assessing the game "generally endeared him to serious fans, it may have been a factor in the decision to let him go" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 11/25). In West Palm Beach, Dave George wrote the Marlins' move was "altogether shocking and stupid and tone deaf at a level that exceeds the franchise’s long-established low standards." George: "I’m hoping Tommy gets another gig with a big-league club in 2016, though the timing here stinks" (PALMBEACHPOST.com, 11/24).

TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT: Stephen Whyno, who covers the NHL for the CP. tweeted he is "moving back to the U.S. soon and staying in sports writing." Whyno called the CP a "phenomenal place" and will remain with the news service through Dec. 19. He wrote his "new adventure starts soon after," and hockey "will still be involved" (TWITTER.com, 11/24).
