Chicago Tribune's Philip Hersh Says Goodbye After More Than 30 Years Of Olympic Coverage

Longtime Olympic writer Philip Hersh is taking a voluntary buyout from the Chicago Tribune after more than 31 years, and in his farewell column he writes the "first day of the rest of my life is Thanksgiving." He writes for "nearly three decades I had the best job in newspaper journalism, thanks to the unflagging support of my editors to pursue stories and cover events on five continents and 35 countries." He listed some of the events he covered, including 15 Olympics, 10 outdoor World Track & Field championships, 17 World Figure Skating Championships, 30 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and 24 U.S. Track & Field Championships or Olympic Trials. Hersh wrote, "I’ll keep you posted on the web site planned for early next year" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 11/24). News of Hersh's departure caused many on Twitter, both fellow Olympic reporters and some of the athletes he covered, to praise his career. The Wall Street Journal's Tripp Mickle wrote, "Rio 2016 won't be the same without @olyphil. He's as dogged and knowledgeable as they come in the Olympic world." The L.A. Times' Helene Elliott: "A true professional whose curiosity and work ethic knew no bounds." Writer Jo-Ann Barnas: "He covered the beat with grit and grace." TSN's Rick Westhead: "Phil Hersh proved time & again sports writing doesn’t just have to be about soft player features & game stories." Gold Medal-winning swimmer Janet Evans: "The end of an era. A true legend in the Olympic world & one of my very favorite reporters. I'll miss you." USA Today's Nancy Armour: "Lucky enough to work with @olyphil the last 20 years, even more privileged to call him a friend. Best of luck!"
