Populous Chosen To Serve As Lead Architect For New St. Paul MLS Stadium

K.C.-based Populous "will be the lead architect" for the new St. Paul stadium MLS expansion club Minnesota United FC is building, according to Frederick Melo of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. Populous already has designed several pro sports venues in the Twin Cities, including Xcel Energy Center, Target Field and TCF Bank Stadium. The firm also is "designing a new soccer stadium" for fellow MLS club Orlando City SC. The privately funded stadium, which will span "roughly 19,000 seats with room to grow," is set for completion in early '18 (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 11/25). In Minneapolis, Nick Halter noted Minnesota United has "not yet announced a general contractor for the project," but locally based Mortensen Construction built the three aforementioned Twin Cities venues. The city of St. Paul and the club are "still negotiating several parts of the stadium deal," and a development and use agreement "will likely go before the City Council" early next year. The team will pay $120M in stadium construction, while the city and Ramsey County "intend to keep the land free from property taxes" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 11/24).
