49ers To Utilize New Security Technology At Levi's Stadium As Part Of Long-Term Deal

The 49ers have scheduled a media tour today of new security technology being tested at Levi's Stadium. The team recently signed a long-term agreement with Palo Alto-based Qylur Intelligent Systems. Financial terms were not disclosed. Qylur produces an automated machine with five containers that scan individual bags for weapons and other items prohibited inside the stadium. The technology works in tandem with magnetometers and metal detectors that patrons walk through before entering the facility. Qylur's technology in Santa Clara is programmed to identify specific items banned from the facility, and the artificial intelligence effectively eliminates human error, according to 49ers VP/Stadium Operations & GM Jim Mercurio. The honeycomb-shaped machine speeds up the screening process by scanning multiple bags at one time from groups of people ranging from five to 25 individuals, Mercurio said. To this point, the 49ers are testing Qylur for non-game day functions only at Gate A on the Intel Plaza. It remains unclear whether Qylur will be in operation for Super Bowl 50, set for Feb. 7 at the stadium, he said. The NFL takes over venue operations for Super Bowl. Levi's Stadium is the second NFL facility to use Qylur. MetLife Stadium three years ago tested the automated system for preseason NFL games and some other events, but it has not used Qylur since '12. The technology was in place for a '14 FIFA World Cup preliminary draw event in Rio de Janeiro. In general, Qylur's business model is tied to a yearly fee that includes a bundling of event ticket costs into the cost for the facility using the technology, company officials said.
