Minding My Business With Devils, Prudential Center VP/Ticket Sales & Service Shawn Doss

Doss said he looks for hard-working, positive
candidates when making a hire
Name: Shawn Doss

Position: Devils and Prudential Center VP/Ticket Sales & Service

Age: 30

Where I’m from: Regina, Saskatchewan.

Where I call home: Hoboken, N.J.

Focusing on right now: Growing and maximizing our membership platform.

Best advice: Getting one person to believe in you every year. That doesn’t have to be at work, it could be anywhere. Getting one connection for you for your year, believing in what you stand for. That’s something I try to live by -- it happens organically.

A must for a new hire: I look for five things: people who are positive, passionate, hard working, willing to learn and people who do things the ethical way. I find those characteristics translate into any kind of position. Those are things I learned when I first started inside sales and try to display and do every single day.

Exec I most admire: 49ers COO AL GUIDO -- he hired me for my first job. I called the Coyotes when I was a senior in college and randomly got to him -- he was the Director of Ticket Sales at the time. He taught me how to build up a culture and how important it was to do that. He’s been instrumental in believing in me.

Best book I’ve read: It’s called “The Score Takes Care of Itself” by BILL WALSH. It talks about how if you do the little things right every hour, it turns into doing the right things every day, which turns into every week, which turns into every year. What really hit me is that he talked about scripting the first 50 plays in the Super Bowl -- I always think failing to plan is planning to fail -- so if a Super Bowl-winning coach can script out the first 50 plays, why can’t I do that with my campaign?

First thing in the morning: I chug 10 ounces of water, check my email and check on my 21-month-old daughter NAULAKHA. I typically try to get in the gym around 5:30 and will stay maybe until 6-6:30. My two go-to sites are the BBC World News and the Wall Street Journal.

Talking tech: The cell phone just in general has really changed the way we do things. When I started selling, it was sort of frowned upon to call a decision-maker on their cell phone. Now, you’ll very frequently communicate via text or call them on their cell phone. The cell phone then parlays into other things, whether it’s LinkedIn, Twitter or something else.

Must-have music: What’s usually on my iPod is LIL WAYNE. But I’m in grad school now at Columbia, so I’ve been listening to a lot of classical music, which is good for studying. It’s easy to read with.

Food for thought: We like to eat healthy, so we cook a lot of our meals. But if we’re going to go out, we’ve been loving this place with gluten-free pizza called Two Boots. If I could have one meal, I’m a big fan of chicken and broccoli. I eat it all the time and never get sick of it.

How I unwind: Going to the gym -- it’s the one piece of time I have alone. Then of course spending time with my wife, JACKIE, and our baby. We also try to do a trip together internationally every year. This year we went to the South of France, and the year before, we went to Italy.

Day in the life: The biggest challenge we face is getting people to come experience what we offer here. We’ve taken so many strides to make things better. We had the Ritz-Carlton come in and do a training session for our whole company, we’re doing things out in the community that we haven’t in the past. There’s so much competition in the market, but once people get here, they love what we’re building.
