Audience Analysis: Top NBCSN Numbers Now All NASCAR; Golf Channel Up In October

NBCSN drew its fourth-best audience ever on Sunday, with 4.24 million viewers watching the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Campingworld.com 500 At Talladega. That falls below only prior Cup races from Indianapolis (4.7 million), Michigan (4.29 million) and Pocono (4.26). Prior to Cup races this season, the previous viewership high for NBCSN was 4.1 million viewers for both the Canada-U.S. men’s hockey Gold Medal game at the ’14 Sochi Games and the ’14 NHL Western Conference Finals Kings-Blackhawks Game 7. The 4.24 million viewers for Talladega on NBCSN was down 11% from 4.76 million viewers for last year's race on ESPN, and down from 4.92 million viewers on ESPN in '13.

COUNTER PUNCH: HBO’s “World Championship Boxing” is seeing viewership up 14% compared to last season. The premium cable net drew 1.07 million viewers for the first-time airing of Terence Crawford’s win over Dierry Jean last Saturday night from 11:17-11:56pm ET. That figure is up 7% from Crawford’s “WCB” win earlier this year on HBO.

ANGLE OF APPROACH: The '15-16 PGA Tour season already has two tournaments under its belt, and Golf Channel's viewership for the tournaments is up over last year and up over the first year of the wraparound schedule in '13-14. The season-opening Frys.com Open averaged 189,000 viewers for its four days of live coverage, flat compared to last year's event, but up from 140,000 viewers in the fall of '13. Meanwhile, last weekend's Shriners Hospitals for Children Open averaged 218,000 viewers, up from 152,000 last year and 156,000 in '13. Those increases, plus Golf Channel's second-best Presidents Cup week audience on record, helped the cable net see its most-watched October on record on a total-day basis. The net averaged 88,000 viewers this past month, up 52% from October '14.

The charts below lists final audience figures from recent sports telecasts.

Big Get Jay Wright, March Madness is upon us and ESPN locks up CFP

On this week’s pod, our Big Get is CBS Sports college basketball analyst Jay Wright. The NCAA Championship-winning coach shares his insight with SBJ’s Austin Karp on key hoops issues and why being well dressed is an important part of his success. Also on the show, Poynter Institute senior writer Tom Jones shares who he has up and who is down in sports media. Later, SBJ’s Ben Portnoy talks the latest on ESPN’s CFP extension and who CBS, TNT Sports and ESPN need to make deep runs in the men’s and women's NCAA basketball tournaments.

SBJ I Factor: Nana-Yaw Asamoah

SBJ I Factor features an interview with AMB Sports and Entertainment Chief Commercial Office Nana-Yaw Asamoah. Asamoah, who moved over to AMBSE last year after 14 years at the NFL, talks with SBJ’s Ben Fischer about how his role model parents and older sisters pushed him to shrive, how the power of lifelong learning fuels successful people, and why AMBSE was an opportunity he could not pass up.
