Fly Away Home: Cubs Use United Despite American Airlines Serving As Team's Sponsor

American Airlines "triumphed earlier this year by getting a big legacy sponsorship agreement" with the Cubs, but it turns out United Airlines "isn't entirely out of the picture" as far as the team is concerned, according to Lewis Lazare of the CHICAGO BUSINESS JOURNAL. United, which previously "had a 10-year-sponsorship agreement with the Cubs that included signage" at Wrigley Field and naming rights at the former United Club," was "essentially knocked ... out of the ballpark as a major Cubs sponsor." A Cubs spokesperson, however, confirmed that the team "does use United for charter flights to away games, including the two NCLS games" this past weekend against the Mets. An American Airlines spokesperson declined comment on why AA "didn't pick up the Cubs charter flight operations along with its big sponsorship agreement earlier this year." The Cubs "apparently had hoped to keep its charter arrangements flying under the radar screen" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 10/16).
