Flyers Chair ED SNIDER missed last night's home opener against the Panthers as he "chose to remain at his home in California, where he is resting after recent medical therapy." The franchise in a statement said that Snider's involvement in team and company operations "is not affected." Last year, a Flyers official said that Snider "was battling a treatable cancer" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/13). Snider "also missed" September's BOG meeting and NHL exec committee meeting Sept. 29 in N.Y Aside from the WIRTZ family, which owns the Blackhawks, Snider is the NHL's "longest-tenured owner." He "remains a powerful voice in the league, as close confidant" to Commissioner GARY BETTMAN (TSN.ca, 10/12).

SEARCH PARTY: UCF announced that it has "hired a national search agency to fill" the AD position as GEORGE O'LEARY has decided to step down from his interim post. UCF Exec Senior Associate AD & CFO BRAD STRICKLIN "will serve" in the role on an interim basis. UCF VP/Communications & Marketing GRANT HESTON "will oversee the search and athletics department operations for the university." O'Leary replaced TODD STANSBURY, who "left to lead Oregon State's athletic department this summer" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 10/13).

STOP THE VIOLENCE: L.A. Police are "looking for the people involved in a fight outside Dodger Stadium" after Friday's playoff game against the Mets "that sent one fan to the hospital with critical injuries." LAPD Officer MATTHEW LUDWIG said that the person "remained hospitalized" yesterday "in critical but stable condition." The fight broke out in a parking lot around 10:30pm PT. Ludwig said that a "verbal argument between fans escalated into the physical confrontation" (L.A. TIMES, 10/13).  

A MODERN DAY DALTON: UFC fighter RONDA ROUSEY talked about her burgeoning movie career with "ET," noting she had been “pursuing” the lead role in the remake of “ROAD HOUSE” for two years. She said, “I really don’t think any other man could ever be (PATRICK SWAYZE). I think that it’s a wise angle to take to do a gender flip of the role.” Co-host Kevin Frazier noted Rousey also is set to appear in the film “MILE 22” with MARK WAHLBERG in ‘16 and “she’s hoping it will help her snag the role she really wants, ‘Captain Marvel.’” Rousey “seems ready to jump from the ring to acting full time” but she “might have to wait until she retires” (“ET,” 10/12). Meanwhile, Rousey yesterday confirmed that she “is dating" fellow UFC fighter TRAVIS BROWNE (ESPN.com, 10/12).

: New Jersey Gov. CHRIS CHRISTIE last night “made the trek out to Citi Field” for Dodgers-Mets NLDS Game 3 (NJ.com, 10/12)....Former U.S. Rep. and Oklahoma QB J.C. WATTS, Chair of the largest African-American-owned lobbying company in DC, has “been approached” about running for House Speaker and “is interested.” A source wrote Watts is “going to wait to see” what U.S. Rep. PAUL RYAN (R-Wisc.) decides (POLITICO.com, 10/12)….The Magic will “raise awareness through their Pink in the Paint initiative” tonight during their matchup with the Heat. The event’s co-partner is Florida Hospital, and the Magic are “hosting a ticket promotion that will donate money back to the Florida Hospital Breast Care Fund” (ORLANDO BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/9 issue).
