Chitwood: All Signs Point To Jan.12 Completion Date For $400M Daytona Rising Project

With less than 100 days until the Jan. 12 target date for completion of the Daytona Int'l Speedway renovation project, contractor Barton Malow "has enclosed the top of the Speedway's new signature tower in glass and assembled" 75% of the new 101,500 grandstand seats, according to a front-page piece by Godwin Kelly of the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL. DIS President Joie Chitwood III said of Jan. 12, "That is our target date. Everybody here is ready and excited for that date to arrive.” Barton Malow VP Len Moser said that 693 trade workers "swarmed the construction site last week doing mostly 'finishing work' such as hanging drywall, painting new walls and connecting electrical and air-conditioning systems." He said, “We are going through our final punch lists now. We've done a tremendous amount of work in the last 27 months." Kelly notes DIS "has four founding sponsors in place (Toyota, Chevrolet, Florida Hospital, Sunoco) and Barton Malow is working with those companies to dress up their grandstand access points." Moser added, "We're working with them on getting those areas complete. You will start to see some of their sponsorship graphics, signage and elements coming together in the next month" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 10/13).
