Media Notes

The GUARDIAN's Terrance Ross writes the way the case involving the NYPD and Hawks G Thabo Sefolosha, in which Sefolosha was acquitted last week, was "largely ignored by sports media revealed far more about our desire to sensationalize trivial issues while avoiding the hardest ones." Whether it was a "concerted effort on the part of major networks and publications to leave the touchy subject of police brutality alone -- or if it was a more subconscious negligence, is unknown, but the silence surrounding the issue was deafening." The only mainstream reporter who has "really been outspoken, not only about the importance of the case but also the media’s silence on it, has been ESPN’s Bomani Jones, who vented about the lack of coverage" on his radio show (THEGUARDIAN.com, 10/12). Jones last week said, “You had the NBA playoffs last year legitimately swung as the Hawks’ best defensive player was out with a broken leg for that whole time. And you had nary a peep from most of the NBA media; that, ladies and gentlemen, is shameful” (“Highly Questionable,” ESPN, 10/9).

RADIO WAVES: In Baltimore, Jeff Barker wrote the city's sports radio has a "heavy local flavor," as there is no ESPN Radio affiliate in the market. ESPN Senior VP/Production & Business Divisions Traug Keller said, "Baltimore is certainly on my radar." He added that sports radio "needs to expand its audience." Keller: "We're making a concerted effort. You want new people coming -- younger people. To do that, you've got to reflect back. You've got to have a more diverse lineup in terms of what you're putting on air. If you're not offering a diverse array with either Hispanics or African-Americans or women, you're missing a huge part of the pie" (Baltimore SUN, 10/10).

INSIDE LOOK: DEADLINE.com's Anthony D'Alessandro noted author James Andrew Miller is writing an as-yet untitled book about talent agency CAA, which will "be the launch title of Custom House, a new boutique label under William Morrow/Harper Collins." The book will "cover decades of the talent agency's history" and also "delve into later years with a new generation of agency and the quest for equity and capitalization from TPG investing in the company" (DEADLINE.com, 10/9). Miller and Tom Shales in '11 released a similar book about ESPN (THE DAILY).
