NBA Commissioner Silver Says Talk Of Expansion Franchise In Europe Is Premature

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver yesterday said it is "premature" to talk about an NBA expansion franchise in Europe, according to the AP. Silver said he does not think "it's going to happen in the very near future" but it "could happen one day." Silver also said that the NBA "will not stop" if FIBA "decides to go ahead with its plan to change its calendar and have games coinciding with the NBA season" (AP, 10/7). However, in Boston, Kieran Canning notes some Celtics players "have thrown their support behind the talk of a European franchise." Celtics G Marcus Smart, whose team is playing in Madrid this week, said, "I wouldn’t mind it. It’s amazing being over here and the competition is at an all-time high here.” Celtics F Jordan Mickey "even thinks a European team could bring more variety to the NBA with the continent’s own style of basketball." He said, “I would love to come over here and play against European teams. It’s just a different style of basketball, so it’s always fun to play against some different competition" (BOSTON HERALD, 10/8).

FIT FOR KINGS: In L.A., Ben Bolch notes the Clippers and Hornets will play exhibition games Oct. 10 and 14 in China, and NBA officials are treating the contests "like they're fit for royalty, shipping 27,974 wood squares to China to ensure the courts in both venues have a regulation-quality feel." NBA China CEO David Shoemaker said that the league "decided to hold its first-ever game in Shenzen because of the city's strategic importance as one of the country's tech hubs and its proximity to Hong Kong." Shanghai was selected as a host for the Oct. 14 game "because of its size (population: 24 million) and historic significance" (L.A. TIMES, 10/8).
