Source: Redskins Could Play '16 Contest In London; More Int'l Series Games Expected

The Redskins are "giving consideration" to playing one of their '16 games in London, according to a source cited by Jones & Clarke of the WASHINGTON POST. Negotiations between the NFL, the Redskins and other teams under consideration "remain ongoing and at this point have not been finalized." It is believed that the Redskins "will likely wind up making the list of London-bound teams." Twelve of the 32 NFL teams "have not played or are not scheduled to play in London" since the Int'l Series began in '07. The Redskins are "one of those dozen." The NFL is "believed to be considering four games in London" for '16 (WASHINGTON POST, 10/8).

GOING GLOBAL: The AP's Barry Wilner reported NFL owners yesterday "approved more international games" through '25, including "quite possibly in Mexico, Germany and Canada." Mexico, where one regular-season game was played in '05 and drew a "record attendance of 103,467, is a front-runner for next year." NFL Exec VP/Int'l Mark Waller said, "That's our biggest fan base, our most vibrant market. It would be a logical place to start." Wilner notes the NFL "will announce" the '16 international games this fall. Three games are "being held at London's Wembley Stadium this season for the second straight year, and that number could be increased." The league also is "looking at Toronto and Vancouver, and several cities in Germany have expressed interest in hosting games" (AP, 10/8). YAHOO SPORTS' Frank Schwab wrote NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "has made it a top priority to expand the game" beyond the U.S., and this is "another big step toward that." Mexico and Germany "stand out as possible locations for future regular-season games," and Brazil "might be in the mix too." It "might help grow the league but there should be legitimate concerns about how it creates an imbalance in the schedule" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 10/7).
