Anaheim City Council Looks To Reboot Stalled Talks With Angels Over Lease Agreement

An Anaheim City Council member has "asked for an update on the city’s stalled stadium-lease negotiations" with the Angels, according to Art Marroquin of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. The move comes "more than a year after the Angels announced that they were walking from the bargaining table with Anaheim city officials." The Angels have a window from '16-19 to "get out of the lease for the 45,000-seat, city-owned" Angel Stadium. If the team "doesn’t opt out, then the current pact runs through" '29. Council member Lucille Kring said, “We haven’t really had a chance to talk about them in almost nine or 10 months, so we need to get an update if we’re moving forward with negotiations.” Angels consultant Marie Garvey and city spokesperson Mike Lyster said that there "were no updates." It was "unclear when the issue will be brought back to the City Council for discussion" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 10/8).

NO PLACE LIKE NO-CAL: In Oakland, Matthew Artz notes MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Tuesday "left no doubt" that he wants the A's "to stay put." Manfred said, "I want the A's to stay in Oakland. I think it is possible to get a stadium done in Oakland, and that remains my preference." Artz notes the city "last met with A's officials in August and additional talks are expected later this year." Ohio Univ. sports economics professor Robert Boland said, "I think Oakland has a much better chance of keeping the A's right now from the perspective that MLB wants them there and the Giants want them there" (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 10/8). In S.F., Ann Killion writes the A's "must finally, realistically plan" for their "future in Oakland." The fans "favor it, too." They are "tired of the owners trying to relocate" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/8).
