Nike Recreates Iconic "Animal House" Toga Party With Famous Oregon Alums

Nike "celebrates its deep ties" to the Univ. of Oregon in a "new, feel-good ad" that recreates the famous toga-party scene from the '78 National Lampoon movie, "Animal House," according to Gabriel Beltrone of ADWEEK. Titans QB Marcus Mariota "arguably has the best role, standing in for John Belushi as resident guitar smasher." Otis Day & The Knights reprise their musical role in the commercial, "perfectly setting the tone." Wieden+Kennedy, Portland, "created the spot, which clocks in at almost five and a half minutes -- thanks in large part to the extensive freeze-frame credits, another stylistic nod to the movie." Nike "released the spot to coincide" with last Saturday's Oregon-Michigan State game. "Animal House" was "largely filmed" in Eugene, where UO is located, and the spot acts "as a standalone paean to Nike's long history with the college" (ADWEEK.com, 9/14). In Portland, Allan Brettman noted the original cast is "replaced by notable" Oregon alumni, including actor Ty Burrell, ESPN's Neil Everett, former NFLers Ahmad Rashad, Dan Fouts, Dennis Dixon and Joey Harrington, as well as U.S. Olympic runners Ashton Eaton and Galen Rupp, Eagles RB Kenjon Barner and NFL free agent RB LaMichael James. Nike designer and UO alum Tinker Hatfield "also appears" in the spot. A version of the film "will run in Autzen Stadium" during Oregon football games (OREGONLIVE.com, 9/12). SI.com's Kenny Ducey wrote the "only thing missing from this video is custom Nike togas" from Founder Phil Knight (SI.com, 9/12).
