Tokyo Organizers Scrap Logo For '20 Games Amid Ongoing Plagiarism Claims

Organizers of the '20 Tokyo Games today dropped the logo for the event amid "accusations of plagiarism, maintaining that it was not copied but saying too many doubts had been raised for it to be usable," according to Elaine Lies of REUTERS. Questions about the logo "arose immediately after its July unveiling" when a Belgian designer claimed that it "was too similar to his logo for the Theatre de Liege and demanded its use be halted." Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto said that he felt the "public doubts" about the logo were "in danger of damaging the reputation of the Olympics, so he requested that it be withdrawn." Muto noted that a new logo "would be decided as soon as possible and in open competition." Lies notes Tokyo Broadcasting System recently conducted a survey and 85% of respondents "felt the logo should be changed." This is the "latest embarrassment for Japan" around the '20 Games, following its "scrapping of plans for the new Olympic stadium" (REUTERS, 9/1). The AFP's Hiroshi Hiyama notes sponsors of the '20 Games, including Japan Airlines, had in recent days "started using the logo in advertising campaigns" (AFP, 9/1).
