FIFA Planning To Propose First Set Of Major Reforms Next Month To Exec Committee

The FIFA Exec Committee "will be the first target of major reforms when the organization meets in Zurich next month," according to Joshua Robinson of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. A source said that FIFA Audit & Compliance Committee Chair Domenico Scala "will propose to strip the 25-person executive committee of several responsibilities tied to the day-to-day running of the organization." The source added that the "most urgent reform is the implementation of term limits for top FIFA officials." Under the new proposal, the FIFA president, secretary general and Exec Committee members "would serve a maximum of two or three four-year terms." Scala also is "expected to present a possible new model for FIFA management." It "would see the formation of a full-time management board of hired professionals to handle operations such as broadcast contracts and sponsorship." The authority of the executive committee, "whose members come from the ranks of global soccer administrators, would be limited to sporting matters" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/1). The office of Switzerland Attorney General Michael Lauber today said that U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Sept. 14 in Zurich "will give updates" on their respective FIFA corruption investigations. The AP's Graham Dunbar notes the Swiss case "focuses on possible money laundering during the bidding" for the '18 World Cup, won by Russia, and the '22 event, won by Qatar (AP, 9/1).
