League Notes

In Portland, Kerry Eggers writes 17-year-old golfer Brooke Henderson "could be the next big thing" for the LPGA after claiming the Cambia Portland Classic yesterday and becoming the third-youngest winner in tour history. Henderson has been performing well "with regularity since she turned pro last December." In nine LPGA events prior to this weekend, she "amassed $466,264 in earnings," which would have ranked 20th on the money list if she were a member of the LPGA "despite playing fewer events than anyone ranked among the top 50." Henderson is "already commanding plenty of attention" (PORTLAND TRIBUNE, 8/17). Golf Channel's Gary Williams said Henderson's win is a "thunderbolt for Canadian golf." Williams: "That is going to be a huge national story this week" ("Morning Drive," Golf Channel, 8/17).

STARS & SKATES
: In Nashville, David Ammenheuser writes the local organizing committee for the '16 NHL All-Star Weekend "wants you to start thinking about chilly winter days and an outdoor ice rink." An ice rink, scheduled to open Dec. 12, will "be the focal point of the park's transformation" leading up to the Jan. 29-31 event. The rink will "have open skating hours, as well as planned ice skating performances and ice hockey exhibitions." The NHL Fan Fair, "an interactive hockey playland, will be held at Music City Center, Jan. 28-31." There will be "music concerts inside Music City Center and also on an outdoor stage to be built on Demonbreun Street" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 8/17).

RETIREMENT HOME: CBSSPORTS.com's Adam Gretz noted Hockey HOFer Pavel Bure is the chair of the new World Legends Hockey League, a "six-team circuit that will feature national teams from Russia, Sweden, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Finland that is set to officially begin play in November." Players and referees must be "at least 45 years of age and played in IIHF-sanctioned games representing their country." The league will have "an All-Star event to kick things off in October that will feature a team of Russian players taking on an All-Star team of players from the rest of the world," including the U.S. and Canada (CBSSPORTS.com, 8/16).
